Participants-Monkeys
Recipient-Man

In this picture, it shows the monkeys scooping the man's brain and feasting bit by bit, leaving him in great pain. The man appears to be helpless, but only to resign to his fate. Accepting that he got to end his life in such a way.

It happens in a dilapidated alley which is old and dark. In my opinion, the setting is set at a dilapidated alley because it is a ritual or culture of the past.

The way the author took the picture give us a feeling like as if the man was staring at us. Taking a photo at an eye level gave us a feeling as if we are part of photo. Like we were there at that moment witnessing the horrifying event.

The message given to us is that put yourself in others people's shoe, treat them the way you wants to be treat. The ritual is a reverse of human eating monkey brains.

Whats The Message Behind This? ♣Wilson♣ShaoWei♣Shahfiyana♣Atiqah

The picture shows two monkeys eating a human brain. The man is looking at the audience because he wants to capture our attention and get us engaged into the picture. In this picture, the author put it as the actors [two monkeys] were not looking the audience because the author is trying to convey the message on how people are ignoring the cruel action and how uncivilised reality is when in real-life, humans are doing it to the helpless monkeys.

INVESTIGATOR Zhi Min 17 Entry 5

Chapter7

'Ar-r, Miss Maudie can't chew gum -' Jem broke into a grin. 'You know, she can talk pretty sometimes. One time i asked her to have a chew and she said no thanks, that - chewing gum cleaved to her palate and rendered her speechless,' said Jem carefully.
Opinion: Miss Maudie really could not chew gums but chewing gums is actually very easy. She end up having the gums cleaved to her palate somehow shows that she was quite good in this.
Palate is the roof of our mouth. It helps to sperate the oral cavity from nasal cavity.

Chapter8

I did not wonder where Mr Avery gathered his meteorological statistics: they came straight from the Rosetta Stone.

Opinion: Scout somehow really understands Mr Avery very well and from we could also conclude that she learnt alot from reading. At her age she also knew something like th Rosetta Stone.

Rosetta Stone is an ancient Egyptian Artifact. It is use in advancing modern in understanding hieroglyphic writing. The text consist of three transalation in a single passage. It help greatly to human in deciphering many undecipherable hieroglyphic writing.

quote picker chapter 7 and 8 toh shao wei (36)

scout said'As Atticus once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it: if I had gone alone to the Radley Place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left Jem alone and tried not to bother him.' Page 57

this is one of the example of atticus advise to scout for solving the few conflicts of her life. scout clearly have great respect to her dad and brother, while she is stunningly mature for her age.

'Thank who?' scout asked.
'Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn't know it when he put the blanket around you.'
My stomach turned to water and I nearly threw up when Jem held out the blanket and crept toward me. 'He sneaked out of the house-turn 'round-sneaked up, an' went like this!'" Page 72

scout looked very scared that Boo Radley was near but she is also beginning to realize that the mysterious man is trying to protect and befriend her not like what she have thought. Boo gains the sympathy of Scout and the reader in this passage.

INVESTIGATOR Zhi Min 17 Entry 4

Chapter5

She picked up the limp sprout and squeezed her thumb up its tiny stalk. Microscopic grains oozed out. 'why, one sprig of nut-grass can ruin the whole yard.'
Opinion: Miss Maudie loves her garden alot. She could even notice a nut grass. She even swooped down a tin tube and subjected it to blasts from beneath with a poisonous substance. Miss Maudie was afraid that the nut grass would ruin her yard.

Nut grass is also called nut sedge. It have small nutlike tuber and are often troublesome weeds. It is named nut grass because of it's tuber resemble nuts but it got nothing to do with nuts. Nut grass is called 'the world's worst weed'. It is a tough competitor for nutrients and it's roots release a substance called allelopathic which is harmful to other plants. Weed pulling is not effective for nut grass as the breakage of roots resulted in leaving it's tuber underground. New plant will then emerge quickly. Most of the herbicide have no effect against nut grass tuber and roots but only kill the leaves.

Chapter6

Insect splashing against the screen were Boo Radley's insane fingers picking the wire to pieces; the chinaberry trees were malignant, hovering alive.
Opinion: It made Boo Radley more scary as his chinaberry tree was also described as malignant which was very dangerous. Not only the fruits were poisonous but the whole tree itself was harmful.
Chinaberry tree have rounded crown, measure between 7 to 12 meters in height. It's flower is pale purple and is small. It gives out a nice fragrant. It's fruit is a yellow marble size drupe. It hangs on tree all winterthen gradually wrinkled then turn white. The leaves of Chinaberry trees can grow up to 50 cm long. The leaves have been use as natural insecticide which is use to store with food. It is highly poisonous. It's fruit is also poisonous if eaten in quantity human may result in loss of appetite, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, bloody faeces, stomach pain and other sypmtoms. It may also lead to death in 24 hours.

In the tree there was another little gift, there was a ball of twine. They decided everything in there was their property. Jem and Scout kept on receiving gifts in the knotwhole. One day on their way home they see that the whole was cemented. Later they talk to Mr. Nathan Radley and he admits that he put the cement there, because the tree was getting rotten.

\Miss Maudies\

Summariser_Murshid_32

Chapter 5

Jem and Dill are becoming really close which makes Scout feel left out so she decides to spend time with someone else. In fact she starts to spend time with one of her neighbors, Miss Maudie Atkinson, a widow with a talent for gardening and cake baking and who was a childhood friend of Atticus’s brother, Jack. She tells Scout that Boo Radley is still alive and it is her assumption Boo is the victim of a harsh father, a “foot-washing” Baptist who believed that most people are going to hell. Miss Maudie adds that Boo was always polite and friendly as a child. She says that most of the rumors about him are not true. She says he wasn’t crazy as a child but because of the way he is living he probably is now. Meanwhile, Jem and Dill plan to give a note to Boo inviting him out to get ice cream with them. They try to stick the note in a window of the Radley home with a fishing pole, but Atticus catches them and orders them to “stop tormenting that man” with their notes or the “Boo Radley” game.

Chapter 6

Dill was leaving and they all were going to his house. They saw Mr. Avery, a white man, urinating outside. They wanted to go on a walk and Scout didn’t want to go and they made fun of her feminism. Jem and Dill wanted to peek in Boo Radley’s house. Scout was still against it though. They spied, then went in the backyard and then they saw a shadow of a man. The man came and they all ran away and the man shot at them. Jems pants got stuck and he took them off and he kept on going. The town people saw Mr. Nathan Radley with a shotgun. They thought it was a nigro in his garden. Dill says that Jem lost his pants playing strip poker. Jem wanted to get his pants so he won’t disappoint his father, but Scout won’t let him do it.

Theme discussion Chap 3~6 by Wilson

Chap 5 & 6
Overall View
Chap 5 & 6 is both on Boo Radley as we can see that Jem and his mates are mocking him and making fun out of it so i think the Theme for it will be prejudice
Chap 6
The children decide to try to see Boo Radley one more time. They wait until
nightfall then sneak out behind the Radley house through the collard patch.
Slowly, the threesome make their way to the back porch and Jem, brave as ever,
volunteers to climb the porch to peer in the back window
.
The Theme is Code of Conduct , they again out of curiosity went to see how Boo looks like and mock about it.
Chap 5

The day after her conversation with Maudie, Scout finds Jem and Dill plotting to
send a note to Boo by attaching a piece of paper to a fishing pole. Scout
reluctantly joins the boys but their plan fails as the paper remains attached to
the fish hook and Atticus catches them in the act: "Son.I'm going to tell you
something and tell you one time: stop tormenting that man. That goes for the
other two of you" .Atticus issues his final warning and scold the children for
the "Boo Radley" play they had thought he had forgotten. Atticus firmly believes
all people, including Boo, deserve respect and should be treated decently
regardless of their class, race, or strange behavior
.
This Chapter is also mainly on Code of Conduct as Jem and Dill dis-respect Radley by try to make fun and make a nuisance out of the guy.
Chap 4 & 3
Overall View
Chap 4 is linked to 5 & 6 over the mocking of Boo Radley
Chap 3 is about how the school boycott and mock Burris in school
Chap 4

For several days the threesome play "Boo Radley" in their front yard, acting out
the scene in which Boo stabs his father with a pair of scissors. The neighbors
notice the game and alert Atticus. Atticus takes the scissors away and scolds
the children who lie by saying they are not talking about the Radley's.

The theme again is Code of Conduct they make fun Radley and even act out the incident to make fun of it.
Chap 3

'To get rid of the- er, cooties. You see, Burris, the other children might catch
them, you wouldn't want that, would you?
'
The Theme for this Chapters is Code of Conduct as the people in school gossip and hurt Burris feelings. They are mocking him as a result i think he was rebellion

chapter 5 and 6 quote picker toh shao wei (36)

miss maudie said: 'foot-washers believe anthing that's pleasure is a sin .did you know some of em' came out of the woods one saturday and passed by this place and told me me and my flowers were going to hell?' pg 49 line 22.

foot washers are seem as overwhlemed aggresive believers in batist and think that having pleasure in god's outdoor is a sin. miss maudie said they came out of the wood and scold her it probaly meant that the foot-washers came out of the blue and they would delibrately find sinners in 'god's outdoor' and reprimand them of their sin.

jem said said:' i'm telling' you the last time ,shut your trap or go home-i declare to god you're gettin' more like a girl every day!'

jem think that scout was being to noisy and said 'you're gettin' more like a girl every day!' meaning that he thinks that girls are talkative and naggy.he scolded scout as he thingks that scout is a worrying too much and scared.

scout said: matches were dangerous, but cards were fatal

scout meant that even though playing matches have real life danger such as causing fire outbreak or hurting yourself but cards are more fatal as adddiction cannot be just healed with time like injuries, they are also the major cause of the major mistake you would make in your life.atticus who is her father would not want that as every parent love their child and prevent them from harm especially those that could not be 'healed' which are addictions.

[Farid Azfar 31] Quote Picker On Chapter 3 & 4 to kill a mocking bird.

Quote: Anybody who went up to the house once oughta not to still run every time he passses it.

Scout was being sarcastic towards Jem Finch. Jem Finch was always afraid of Boo Radley but not when he walked beside Scout and Walter Cunningham. Jem Finch wanted to show to them that he was brave so he boasted and said that he once went all the way up to Boo Radley's house which he did'nt. Therfor Scout said these quote to the clouds above but was actually refering to Jem Finch, that the next time dat "somebody" should not run away.

Quote: "There's some folks who don't eat like us ,'Calpurnia whispered fiercely,'but you ain't to contradict 'em at the table when they don't.

The folks Calpurnia was refering to is Walter Cunningham. Walter Cunningham was from another place so he eats food differently. The way he ate might be weired to Scout and he might have commented something, that was why Calpurnia called Scout to the kitchen to give him a earful not to say anything that might offend Walter Cunningham.

Answer :
He was about to cry as his eyes were red and watery. I think that he was being bullied as he was feeling nervous. We know that Walter is a timid person.

2. Do you think it is right for Walter to stay out to help his father and as a result he cannot pass his first grade?

Answer:
I think that studies should come first. Walter can still help his father out during the holidays. Parents tend to hope that children can focus on their studies first than to helping them out. But however, Walter's father asked Walter to help him out instead of asking him to focus on his studies. This shows that the Cunningham think that studies are not very important.

3. Why did Miss Caroline want Burris to go home?

Answer:
He had cooties and Miss Caroline wanted him to go home to wash his hair with lye soap and treat his scalp with kerosene so that he won't spread it to other children.

Scout was still afraid of Boo Radley but she will be more frightened of Boo Radley when her brother was not with her.

Chapter 1

In this chapter there is a girl who's name is Scout. She is 5 years old. She has a brother named Jem who is older than her. One summer, Jem had broken his arm. And he broke it badly in the elbow. He broke his arm when he was thirteen. Now, she is trying to explain the mystery of how he broke it. At first she starts introducing about some of the people in the neighbourhood. In this neighbourhood, everybody knows everybody. In Scout's family, she has a father named Atticus, Jem, and a cook, who is African American, named Calpurnia. But at the same time Jem broke his arm, that's when they met Dill. Maybe Dill had something to do with the mystery. For the whole summer, they wanted to get Boo Radley out of his house. There was a urban legend that the Radley house was haunted. Everybody knows the different stories that happened in that house. Dill was the most curious about Boo Radley and he was the one who was the most curious among the 3 of them.

Chapter 2

Scout always wanted to go to school. But she already knew how to read on her own. So on the first day of school, when Miss Caroline Fisher expected that no one would know how to read, she was surprised that Scout knew how to read. She tells her that her dad should stop teaching her because he doesn't know how. But Scout had learned reading by herself. Miss Caroline asked the students what they were doing for lunch. Went her classmate, Walter Cunningham, didn't have any money with him, she offered to lend him some. Walter wouldn't accept any of it because he couldn't pay it back. When Miss Caroline heard this, she was not pleased with the way Scout explained it and hit her on the hands.

RACISM Zhi Min 17 Entry 1

In 193os, more than 2 million of African America were slaves in America. There was no nation in greater horror of racism then in America. Regulations were set affecting free negros. (free negro was a term used to describe African Americans who were not slave to the abolition of slavery) Free negro was required to give the mayor a 'satisfatory evidence of freedom'. This requires $50 for himself, $50 for each of his family members and to post a bond of a $1000 to secure 5 white guarantors of good behavior.

In order to remain free, gangs bent on kidnapping and most of the time seizing. In america, if a student had murdered someone he was able to attracts less attention and criticism but if your a negro, slave or free negro you could not testify against the whites.

Negros are often called 'nigger' which is one of the most offensive word in english. They suffered humilations and insults. I personally thinks that every race should had equal treatments.

Alabama In The 1930s [Muhd Farid Azfar 31]

After World War 1, Alabama experienced an economic boom. Alabama needed a lot after the world war 1; resources like coal mine and iron. Alabama started manufacturing. As Alabama's population grew in the 1920s, business and industry attracted the people where labour was cheap. Everything was going well before the great depression. The Great Depression caused agriculture to be depressed;affecting almost all of the population. Industrial economy had begun to drop. Having struggled with sickness, and poverty, Alabama's problems were too much to respond quickly to the help offered by the New Deal. The New Deal programs were designed to "give a hand up, not a hand out".The economic disasters of the 1930s spelled the beginning of the end for farming which had for so long play an important part to the agricultural economy. They also introduced a new radicalism among workers who increasingly looked to labor unions to defend and improve their positions in the industrial economy.

Wilson's POst

[[Shahfiyana`s]] Reflection

Before we when there, our group members have done all lot of research and preparation. We even find the side map of Fort Siloso. Our groups were confident on the task that we are given. We even do our storyboard. At there, we saw POW chambers which is cool. We learned all lot of thing at the Fort Siloso. We learned different types of gun that used during the war. We also learned there are in different sizes, the purpose and what is it used for. My groups were very comfortable there because we were well prepared before hand. After the field trip,we felt relaxing because this projects had ended and satisfied with our work that we have done so far.

ŴĭĺŚŏʼn's Reflection

Before going
We done allot of research and we even find the side map of it and i felt confident on the project we do ...

At there
I felt it very comfortable while taking video as it seem to me that i have came here before but it is thought the Internet and every of our plan goes well with our planing before hand.

After the Trip
We felt fun and it is relaxing to us as we planned it very carefully hence i felt that planing is very important.

Reflection ( Caiyi )

We were all prepared for the trip. The storyboard, interview questions, script we have done were all done and ready. Zhimin and Shaowei each bring along a camera as they are the photographer. Wilson, in the other hand was the one in charge of handing the video camera. When we reached there, we followed the tour guide. She brought us to different places and told us the history behind it. We found out that there were not enough pictures and information regarding Elizabeth Choy but still we worked together as a team and help one another out. Then, when the tour guide told us that we can go any places where we need to take pictures for our research, we split up. However, we did not go too far from one another so that we would not lose each other. Atiqah and I took pictures that were required for our research. Zhimin and Wilson handled the video camera. Zhimin asked the tour guide a lot of questions regarding Elizabeth Choy while Wilson took video of it. Murshid acted as the interviewee. He had a hard time memorising the script. But he put in a lot of effort to memorise the script in the nick of time. It was an enjoyable trip as I learned a lot more about history and knowledge and information that are not taught in the history textbook and what I enjoyed the most is the way we cooperated with one another. We really worked as a team well.

Reflection and summary on fort siloso, shao wei

Before the trip, we went to several website to gather information on Elizabeth choy, her life, her birth, her death and her accomplishment and why was she honoured as a brave heroine. At fort siloso we interviewed the tour guide and ask for her opinion on Elizabeth choy. Elizabeth choy was born in Sabah in 1910, but moved to Singapore in 1929 to further her studies. She
became a teacher to support her siblings when her mother passed away. During the postwar period she was also a politician, teacher and founder of a school for the blind. She provided the troops with daily necessities. She was then captured as a POW(Prisoner Of War) and suffered in a harsh environment. We experienced it as we entered the hot and stuffy POW station at fort siloso. wilson and zhimin both took good pictures and videos(interview) regarding to the war and Elizabeth at fort siloso, even though not everything went well we still mange to produce quality work.

Overall, Elizabeth choy is a loyal, kind and definitely a person who can endure hardship. For that, she is worthy of our respect, we should strive to be attain her never say die attitude.

My Reflection At Fort Siloso [[atiqah]]

All that was planned for the trip, worked according to plan.Problems that we faced was solved on the spot. Weather was also perfect as it was not too hot and too cold and thankfully it did not rain.Even though we had not enough information about Elizabeth Choy there, we managed to find the POW chamber. We got to interview the busy tour guide. We interviewed her directly right after she stopped talking so as to not miss the chance. The first problem that we faced is that Cai Yi cannot seemed to memorize the questions. Since Zhi Min can memorize the questions and willing to help, we took her as the interviewer and Cai Yi as the photographer.I helped Cai Yi direct and plan the angle and the pictures that had to be taken. The second problem that we faced is that we cannot find people to answer our questions,as they were to shy to do so. So we took Murshid, one of our group member, as one of the interviewees. Shao Wei and Shahfiyana helped Wilson in directing the places and objects that had to be in the video.
Early life
Elizabeth was born in Kudat in British North Borneo (today Sabah). Her great-grandparents had been assisting German missionaries in Hongkong and their work had brought them to North Borneo. There, the Yong family set up a coconut plantation. Her father had been the eldest in a family of 11 children and after completing his early education in China with some English education in North Borneo, he gained employment as a civil servant. Marrying the daughter of a priest from a well-respected family in North Borneo, he was transferred to Jesselton and later promoted to District Officer and moved on to Borneo's interiors in Kalimantan. Elizabeth was looked after by a Kadazan nanny and acquired Kadazan as her first language.
Education
Later, Elizabeth's father was posted to Tenom where there were no educational facilities, so Elizabeth and her siblings were sent back to Kudat where her paternal grandfather ran the village school, teaching in Chinese. Her higher education was taken at St Monica's School between 1921 to 1929, an Anglican missionary boarding school in Sandakan. Because the teachers could not pronounce Chinese names, she adopted the English name Elizabeth. In 1925, she and her aunt Jessie became the first girls to sign up in North Borneo's inaugural Girl Guides Company. By 1927, she was teaching the lower standards even whilst she was studying. In December 1929, she came to Singapore to further her studies at the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus at Victoria Street. She shone academically, obtaining the Prize of Honor in her first year of school in December 1930. She resided with her fourth uncle at Selegie where he ran a music shop, the original T. M. A. at High Street. The untimely death of her mother in 1931 and the onset of the Great Depression placed upon her the burden of raising her six younger siblings. Thus she forwent a college education, even a possible scholarship, to start work so she could finance the education of her younger siblings

My Reflection On Fort Siloso

The entrance to Fort Siloso was wonderful. There was a cannon placed in front on the entrance. Then, my tour guide told me how Fort Siloso got its name. In Philippines, Siloso means a jealous person. The name for Fort Siloso is actually Fort Siliso. The Americans at that time did not know how to pronounce Siliso so they pronounced it as siloso and that is how Fort Siloso got its name.

We went in the Prisoners Of Wars chamber. It was quite exciting inside. The chamber showed us past prisoners and my guide elaborated about the prisoners.

Zhi Min also took an interview with me. She asked me about Elizabeth Choy and her past life. My most favourite place was the place where there was sculptures of the Japanese army and the British army. I liked the part where the Japanese leader and the British leader was having a meeting. They looked exactly the same as the one i looked at my History textbook.

My job at Fort Siloso was to look for suitable places to take picture or have an interview. I must also memorise the script and my answers for the interview. Wilson was our videographer and he took quite good videos. Zhi Min was our photographer and she also took nice and great pictures.

The difficulties we faced during our trip was when we could not find a nice background for our interview. However, we overcame it when we saw a river near Fort Siloso and we immediately and the the the weather was also good for our interview. Finally, we took some pictures and went back to school. I really enjoyed it and would really like to go to Fort Siloso again if I has a chance.

My Reflection On Fort Siloso

My Experience In Fort Siloso..

I had a wonderful time in fort siloso with my friends. I learned about the history of Singapore and at the same time have fun. Our tour guide was great. She explained very clearly about the heroes and war. My favourite time was at the sculptures chamber. There are different sculptures that portray ifferent scenes. For example when the generals were having a important meeting and sculptures of prisoners being torture. They all looked very real. My job was to write the script for my group. We are doing on Heroes. Our Hero was Elizabeth Choy. Our group did faced some difficulties in finding a location to take our interview as there was a slight drizzle outside. We overcome our difficulty when we found the perfect location. It had a nice view as a background. I hope there will be another outing for us.

Reflection [Zhi Min]

The time at Fort Siloso everyone is already appointed with a duty. Everything went quite smoothly at there.
During the trip, we were able to interview the tour guide and know more about Elizabeth Choy. Throughout the interview we get to know Elizabeth Choy contributions to the society and her life after the war. This is when I realise that we had found the wrong information on the internet. Her contribution during world war 2 is that she provide food, medicine and stuffs for the prisoners and not that she supplied information to the British. This is when we get a chance to see the guns used by the Japanese and British during war 2. Caiyi and I also took alot of photographs.

4)She was apprehended by the Japanese.
.

6)She was electricuted,tortured.

7)After she came out,she became a teacher. Then she founded the Singapore School For The Blind.

8)Also posed nude, said that nothing was wrong to pose nude.

9)Interview with survivor.
From 1951 to 1955 she was nominated by the Governor to the Legislative Council, where she spoke frequently on behalf of the poor and needy, and campaigned for the development of social services and family planning. Her war-time experiences had inculcated in her the belief that civil development required effective protection from aggressors. She served as a second lieutenant in the women’s auxiliary of the Singapore Volunteer Corps, where she acquired the nickname “Gunner Choy”.
In 1953 she represented Singapore at the Coronation, and undertook for the Foreign Office a North American lecture tour to explain the aspirations of the people of Singapore and Malaya. To brief herself she insisted on travelling to the trouble spots of Malaya, which were grappling with Communist insurgents. Both her audiences and the press were captivated by her charm, eloquence and beauty as she affirmed the key values which the West shared with South East Asia.
Her teaching career at St Andrew’s continued until 1973, except for a four-year spell as principal of Singapore’s School for the Blind. After her retirement she improved her languages and travelled. She continued with social work and school visits into her nineties, impressing young Singaporeans with the need to maintain strong national defence.
Elizabeth Choy’s husband died in 1973; she is survived by three adopted daughters.
During the world war 1:
During the war, Elizabeth Choy is a teacher and founder of a school for the blind. She was in prison for almost 200 days and was torture by the Japanese in 1943. Her husband and her ran the canteen at the Japanese hospital that had received 800 civilians patients at the surrender of Singapore. Besides food and medicine, they bring messages to British internees. On October 29 her husband was arrested and confined to the Outram Road Prison. She was arrested on November 15 and taken to a cell in the old YMCA building in Orchard Road. She spent 193 days in the cell by more than 20 people in it but she was the only woman. From this she was only allowed out to be interrogated and beaten. To add to the psychological pressure on her husband, she was frequently taken out and tortured in front of her husband, stripped naked while electrodes were inserted into her body. But eventually she was released. Her husband was released some time later.

Places where is worth learning :
They were subjected to interrogation under torture. But they refused to admit the names of any of those whom they had assisted. Quite apart from her celebrity as a war heroine in postwar Singapore, Elizabeth Choy became the first woman member of its Legislative Council in 1951. In 1956 became the first principal of the Singapore School for the Blind. In 1925 she and her aunt set up North Borneo’ s first Girl Guide company. Her mother died in 1931 and she had to go out to work to help to bring up her younger brothers and sisters. But although she was not able to complete her qualifications, she was able to teach.

After the war:
She worked as an artists’ and photographers’ model. The first copy was donated by her daughters, to whom she gave it, to the Singapore Art Museum. In 1949 she returned to Singapore and in 1951 was appointed to the Legislative Council, serving a five-year term. In 1956 she became the first principal of the Singapore School for the Blind, after which in 1960 she returned to St Andrews Boys’ School where she had taught before the war.

Biodata :
Elizabeth Choy, wartime prisoner of the Japanese and postwar teacher, was born on November 29, 1910. She died on September 14, 2006, aged 95.

Elizabeth Choy was a woman who made a difference. War heroine and legislator, Elizabeth is an icon of the strength and resilience of women in Singapore. She was one of the founders of the Singapore Council of Women, a pioneer who played a pivotal role in shaping Singapore’s social and legislative structure.

Mrs. Elizabeth Choy was the first and only women to be nominated to the Legislative Council. In 2005, she was honored by SCWO as one of the outstanding individuals who have made ground breaking contributions to the status and condition of women in Singapore. Immortalised on the SCWO Wall of Fame, her achievements and countless contributions will inspire and encourage the generation of today to understand that the future is ours to shape. The feudal social setting prevailing in the fifties was loaded against women. The status of women in the family and society were inferior to men, polygamy was common, very few were given education, jobs were not easily available and pay was never equal for both genders for the same job. Elizabeth Choy’s was instrumental in the move for women’s emancipation in Singapore.

After the fall of Singapore to Japan in 1942, she and her husband ran a hospital canteen, obtaining food, medicine and money for European internees. In 1943, the couple were arrested by the Japanese. For 193 days, they were locked up in a small cell, where they were tortured and interrogated. They refused to admit to any pro-British sympathies, and never revealed the names of those whom they had assisted.A photograph of her was on display as part of her exceptional life as a war heroine during the World War II at the National Museum in Singapore. The photo was taken in 1949 when she was 39 and was working in London as a nude model in an art school. On the photo, she said, "There is nothing to be ashamed of. The body is a work of nature and God's art. The room I was in was like a temple and the students treated me with such reverence. I felt like a goddess."She was very interested in arts and had enrolled in an art appreciation course in London. She was the first principal of Singapore's School for the Blind. She had a brief appearance in Be with Me (2005) as one of her former students, Theresa Chan, is the subject of the documentary segments of the film. One of her quotes,"If not for war, they would be just like me. They would be at home with their family, doing just ordinary things and peaceful work. Let us pray that there will be no more war."
