Chapter7

'Ar-r, Miss Maudie can't chew gum -' Jem broke into a grin. 'You know, she can talk pretty sometimes. One time i asked her to have a chew and she said no thanks, that - chewing gum cleaved to her palate and rendered her speechless,' said Jem carefully.

Opinion: Miss Maudie really could not chew gums but chewing gums is actually very easy. She end up having the gums cleaved to her palate somehow shows that she was quite good in this.

Palate is the roof of our mouth. It helps to sperate the oral cavity from nasal cavity.

Chapter8

I did not wonder where Mr Avery gathered his meteorological statistics: they came straight from the Rosetta Stone.

Opinion: Scout somehow really understands Mr Avery very well and from we could also conclude that she learnt alot from reading. At her age she also knew something like th Rosetta Stone.

Rosetta Stone is an ancient Egyptian Artifact. It is use in advancing modern in understanding hieroglyphic writing. The text consist of three transalation in a single passage. It help greatly to human in deciphering many undecipherable hieroglyphic writing.

scout said'As Atticus once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it: if I had gone alone to the Radley Place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left Jem alone and tried not to bother him.' Page 57

this is one of the example of atticus advise to scout for solving the few conflicts of her life. scout clearly have great respect to her dad and brother,while she is stunningly mature for her age.

My stomach turned to water and I nearly threw up when Jem held out the blanket and crept toward me. 'He sneaked out of the house-turn 'round-sneaked up, an' went like this!'" Page 72

scout looked very scared that Boo Radley was near but she is also beginning to realize that the mysterious man is trying to protect and befriend her not like what she have thought. Boo gains the sympathy of Scout and the reader in this passage.

Chapter5

She picked up the limp sprout and squeezed her thumb up its tiny stalk. Microscopic grains oozed out. 'why, one sprig of nut-grass can ruin the whole yard.'

Opinion: Miss Maudie loves her garden alot. She could even notice a nut grass. She even swooped down a tin tube and subjected it to blasts from beneath with a poisonous substance. Miss Maudie was afraid that the nut grass would ruin her yard.

Nut grass is also called nut sedge. It have small nutlike tuber and are often troublesome weeds. It is named nut grass because of it's tuber resemble nuts but it got nothing to do with nuts. Nut grass is called 'the world's worst weed'. It is a tough competitor for nutrients and it's roots release a substance called allelopathic which is harmful to other plants. Weed pulling is not effective for nut grass as the breakage of roots resulted in leaving it's tuber underground. New plant will then emerge quickly. Most of the herbicide have no effect against nut grass tuber and roots but only kill the leaves.

Chapter6

Insect splashing against the screen were Boo Radley's insane fingers picking the wire to pieces; the chinaberry trees were malignant, hovering alive.

Opinion: It made Boo Radley more scary as his chinaberry tree was also described as malignant which was very dangerous. Not only the fruits were poisonous but the whole tree itself was harmful.

Chinaberry tree have rounded crown, measure between 7 to 12 meters in height. It's flower is pale purple and is small. It gives out a nice fragrant. It's fruit is a yellow marble size drupe. It hangs on tree all winterthen gradually wrinkled then turn white. The leaves of Chinaberry trees can grow up to 50 cm long. The leaves have been use as natural insecticide which is use to store with food. It is highly poisonous. It's fruit is also poisonous if eaten in quantity human may result in loss of appetite, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, bloody faeces, stomach pain and other sypmtoms. It may also lead to death in 24 hours.

Overall view 

Chap 8 theme is appearance on judging people , Even though that everyone thinks that Boo Radley is a bad guy he appear here that he is also quite a gentleman

Chap 9 shows that Atticus does not prejudice people unlike all others in town he also help people who is in different religion,race and skin color .
Chap 8

Atticus notices that Scout has a blanket wrapped around her shoulders and scolds
her for straying from the one spot he told her to stay in. Scout explains that
neither she nor Jem left the Radley yard and that they don't know where the
blanket came from. They realize that Boo Radley must have slipped the blanket
over Scout while she and Jem were engrossed by the fire. Mr. Radley, his
brother, had been busy helping everyone else at Miss Maudie's house, so Boo is
the only person that could have given Scout the blanket.

Chap 9

A boy at school, Cecil Jacobs, teases Scout, saying that her father "defends
niggers". Scout will not accept insults about her father and fights Cecil.
Later, she asks Atticus what the phrase means, and he explains that he has
decided to defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who lives in a settlement
behind the town dump. Atticus says many of the town people think he ought not
defend Tom because he is black.

This Chap show that Atticus does not Prejudice and he help everyone who is telling the truth no matter who is it and what is his skin colour is .

Chapter 7

Jem went and he got his pants. School started and it was just as bad as the first grade or worse for Scout. Jem said he never told Scout what happened that night. When he went to get his pants they were folded nicely and sown up. Someone is watching them. It’s like the person knew what Jem was going to do. In the tree there was another little gift, there was a ball of twine. They decided everything in there was their property. Jem and Scout kept on receiving gifts in the knotwhole. One day on their way home they see that the whole was cemented. Later they talk to Mr. Nathan Radley and he admits that he put the cement there, because the tree was getting rotten.

Chapter 8

It is the coldest winter in Maycomb County since 1885, and it is also snowing. School is cancelled that day because of the snow, so Jem and Scout want to play in the snow. They're trying to build a snowman, but there wasn't enough snow. So, they went over to Miss Maudie's, who gladly gave up all of her snow; she doesn't want her plants to freeze up because of it. Soon, there is a lot more snow for Scout and Jem to build a snowman, and they did. They made it look like Mr. Avery. Atticus was very proud of Jem for making the snowman. Later, Atticus rushes Scout and Jem out of their house, and they only figure out why when they arrive at Miss Maudie's house which caught fire. Atticus pushes Scout and Jem to the Radley's yard. Without knowing, Boo put a blanket on each of them, and left. Scout and Jem didn't even realize until the whole thing was over, Atticus, Scout, and Jem went back to their house, and Atticus told them while they were having hot chocolate. Calpurnia told Scout and Jem not to go to school that day because neither of them got any sleep.

1. What did Jem and Scout find in the knot-hole?

Answer:
There were two small images carved on soap. One of the figures was a boy and the other was a girl-doll wearing a crude dress. The girl-doll wore bangs just like Scout. The two figures were actually Scout and Jem.

2.Why did Scout thinks that is Mr Avery makes the dolls but Jem insisted it cannot be Mr Avery?

Answer:
Scout thinks that it was Mr Avery because he carves but Jem points out that Mr Avery lived down the country and did not paid attention to them at all.

3. What did they receive four days later?

Answer:
It was a pocket watch that could not run, on a chain with an aluminium knife and would probably be worth ten dollars if they were new.

Chapter 8

1. Why did Scout scream when she woke up and looked out of the window ?

Answer:
It was snowing. Scout have never seen snow before and she thought that the world was ending so she screamed.

2. Why did the fat flake burn Scout's tongue when she struck her tongue out to catch it?

Answer:
The fat flake is very cold that it burns.

3.Why did Atticus wake Scout up in the middle of the night and ask Jem to take care of her?

Answer:
Miss Maudie's house was on fire and men of Maycomb took the furniture from Miss Maudie's house to a yard across the street. Atticus carried her heavy oak rocking chair because that was what Miss Maudie valued most.

Boo Radley: Boo Radley is described as a tall and scary looking person who runs around at night eating live possums and cats. He was sometime known as a phantom because no one knew who he was and he goes out at night and eat cats or any other living animal. Boo got into trouble with the law when he resisted arrest and was locked up.







Jeremy Finch(Jem): He stayed moody and silent for a week. He keep quiet and stayed in his room. Jem changes by the way he starts having better feelings toward other people. There are many times when Jem start feeling bad for other people, like when him and scout get in a fight.




Miss Caroline: Miss Caroline has other problems besides her modern ideas about how to teach reading. Miss Caroline comes from the northern, less rural part of Alabama, but when it comes to understanding the ways of Maycomb County she might as well be from a foreign country.





Walter Cunningham: A poor farmer who is among the "Sarum bunch," a crowd which assembles near the town jail the night before Tom's trial in order to start a lynching. He is deeply moved by Scout's friendly words when she tries to diffuse the situation, and as a result leads the rest of the men in going home. Ever after, he respects the Finch family greatly.

Chapter 5

Jem and Dill are becoming really close which makes Scout feel left out so she decides to spend time with someone else. In fact she starts to spend time with one of her neighbors, Miss Maudie Atkinson, a widow with a talent for gardening and cake baking and who was a childhood friend of Atticus’s brother, Jack. She tells Scout that Boo Radley is still alive and it is her assumption Boo is the victim of a harsh father, a “foot-washing” Baptist who believed that most people are going to hell. Miss Maudie adds that Boo was always polite and friendly as a child. She says that most of the rumors about him are not true. She says he wasn’t crazy as a child but because of the way he is living he probably is now. Meanwhile, Jem and Dill plan to give a note to Boo inviting him out to get ice cream with them. They try to stick the note in a window of the Radley home with a fishing pole, but Atticus catches them and orders them to “stop tormenting that man” with their notes or the “Boo Radley” game.

Chapter 6

Dill was leaving and they all were going to his house. They saw Mr. Avery, a white man, urinating outside. They wanted to go on a walk and Scout didn’t want to go and they made fun of her feminism. Jem and Dill wanted to peek in Boo Radley’s house. Scout was still against it though. They spied, then went in the backyard and then they saw a shadow of a man. The man came and they all ran away and the man shot at them. Jems pants got stuck and he took them off and he kept on going. The town people saw Mr. Nathan Radley with a shotgun. They thought it was a nigro in his garden. Dill says that Jem lost his pants playing strip poker. Jem wanted to get his pants so he won’t disappoint his father, but Scout won’t let him do it.

Chap 5 & 6 is both on Boo Radley as we can see that Jem and his mates are mocking him and making fun out of it so i think the Theme for it will be prejudice
Chap 6

The children decide to try to see Boo Radley one more time. They wait until
nightfall then sneak out behind the Radley house through the collard patch.
Slowly, the threesome make their way to the back porch and Jem, brave as ever,
volunteers to climb the porch to peer in the back window

.
The Theme is Code of Conduct , they again out of curiosity went to see how Boo looks like and mock about it.
Chap 5

The day after her conversation with Maudie, Scout finds Jem and Dill plotting to
send a note to Boo by attaching a piece of paper to a fishing pole. Scout
reluctantly joins the boys but their plan fails as the paper remains attached to
the fish hook and Atticus catches them in the act: "Son.I'm going to tell you
something and tell you one time: stop tormenting that man. That goes for the
other two of you" .Atticus issues his final warning and scold the children for
the "Boo Radley" play they had thought he had forgotten. Atticus firmly believes
all people, including Boo, deserve respect and should be treated decently
regardless of their class, race, or strange behavior

Chap 4

For several days the threesome play "Boo Radley" in their front yard, acting out
the scene in which Boo stabs his father with a pair of scissors. The neighbors
notice the game and alert Atticus. Atticus takes the scissors away and scolds
the children who lie by saying they are not talking about the Radley's.

The theme again is Code of Conduct they make fun Radley and even act out the incident to make fun of it.
Chap 3

miss maudie said: 'foot-washers believe anthing that's pleasure is a sin .did you know some of em' came out of the woods one saturday and passed by this place and told me me and my flowers were going to hell?' pg 49 line 22.

foot washers are seem as overwhlemed aggresive believers in batist and think that having pleasure in god's outdoor is a sin. miss maudie said they came out of the wood and scold her it probaly meant that the foot-washers came out of the blue and they would delibrately find sinners in 'god's outdoor' and reprimand them of their sin.

jem said said:' i'm telling' you the last time ,shut your trap or go home-i declare to god you're gettin' more like a girl every day!'

jem think that scout was being to noisy and said 'you're gettin' more like a girl every day!' meaning that he thinks that girls are talkative and naggy.he scolded scout as he thingks that scout is a worrying too much and scared.

scout said: matches were dangerous, but cards were fatal

scout meant that even though playing matches have real life danger such as causing fire outbreak or hurting yourself but cards are more fatal as adddiction cannot be just healed with time like injuries, they are also the major cause of the major mistake you would make in your life.atticus who is her father would not want that as every parent love their child and prevent them from harm especially those that could not be 'healed' which are addictions.

1. Why did Scout went to look for Miss Maudie Atkinson these few days?

Answer:
Dill started to grow closer to Jem and will only call for her if they need a third party. Miss Maudie admitted into her confidence and whenever Miss Maudie made cakes, she will also made three small cakes for Jem, Scout and Dill and will call for them.

2. Why did Jem attached a note to the end of the fishing pole?

Answer:
They wanted to make Boo Radley come out of the Radley Place sometimes by mentioning that they want to buy him an ice-cream.

3. Why did a Dill keep on ringing the bell with all his might in Atticus's face?

Answer:
They did not tell Atticus that they were looking for Boo Radley and Atticus told them before to
leave Boo Radley alone. They were afraid that Atticus will be angry with them and might scold them.



Chapter 6

1. Why did Jem and Scout went to look for Dill in the night and where did Dill suggested to go?

Answer:
It was Dill's last night in Maycomb and Dill suggested to go for a walk.

2. Why did Scout followed them along but find it suspicious when Dill mentioned that he want to go for a walk?

Answer:
Scout believed that nobody in Maycomb just went out for a walk so she want to see what are they up to.

3.Why did they choose to go and peep at Boo Radley in the night?

Answer:
It was dark at night so nobody can see them and it was easier to see inside a dark than in daytime. Atticus would be deep in a book in the night and Scout believed that Jem thinks that if Boo Radley killed them, they will miss school instead of vacation.

Atticus Finch: He tried every way to help others, who were in the need of it. It is courageous of him to take the TomRobinson case. Even his own family disagreed of taking the case. The reason was because of the bias. He risks in many was when taking the Tom Robinson case. He risks the chance of critization by the people that live in the Maycomb county.



Dill: A young boy is one year older than Scout and three years younger than Jem. Dill moves in with his Aunt Rachel in Alabama and resides with her until the start of school in Mississippi. His first summer in Alabama marks the start of the kids deep interest in the Radley`s.

Jem (Jeremy Finch): Scout's older brother, who is nearly ten at the beginning of the story. Jem is quieter than his sister, and has very high standards and expectations for people.

Atticus Finch: The father of Scout and Jem, Atticus is a lawyer and an extremely morally upright man who strives to deal with everyone fairly. Atticus is sometimes overly optimistic, but his unshakable hope in mankind. Atticus' wife died when Scout was very small, and he has raised his children only with the assistance of
Calpurnia, his black housekeeper and cook.

Scout (Jean Louise Finch): The narrator and main character who begins her story at almost six years old. A rebellious tomboy, Scout has a fierce disposition toward any who challenge her, but at heart she believes in the goodness of people. Calpurnia: A black woman who works as the Finch family's cook and housekeeper. She is one of the many motherly figures in Scout's life and one of the few who can negotiate between the very separate black and white worlds of Maycomb.

Scout was being sarcastic towards Jem Finch. Jem Finch was always afraid of Boo Radley but not when he walked beside Scout and Walter Cunningham. Jem Finch wanted to show to them that he was brave so he boasted and said that he once went all the way up to Boo Radley's house which he did'nt. Therfor Scout said these quote to the clouds above but was actually refering to Jem Finch, that the next time dat "somebody" should not run away.

Chapter3

'To get rid of the- er, cooties. You see, Burris, the other children might catch them, you wouldn't want that, would you?'

Opinion: Burris Ewell isn't a very hygiene person, also not very considerate for his classmate. His classmates might catch cooties too. It is not an easy job to get rid of cooties.

Cooties means a louse or any germs and contaminmants.
Louse plural:(Lice) It feeds on skin debris, feather parts, sebaceous secretions and blood. It have adapted to have features like stout legs to cling on to feathers, fur and hair. Louse usually grow
up to 8mm in size.

Atticus sat down in the swing and crossed his legs.His fingers wandered to his watch pocket; he said that was the only way he could think.

Opinion: At atticus time people are most likely to be still using pocket watch. It is weird when he said it's the only way he could think.

Watch pocket is mostly use to keep pocket watch, which it made to carry in pocket. It is the most common watch in 16th centuries. Pocket watch have a chain attached to it. It prevents it from begin dropped as it can be secured to waistcoat, lapel or belt loop. Pocket watch with a fob is then called a 'fob watch'.

Chapter4

Inside were two scrubbed and polished pennies, one of the other Jem examined them. 'Indian-head's,' he said.

Opinion: At Jem's time it is not common to see Indian penny as he examined them.

Indian penny was produced at Philadelphia Mint in 1859 to 1909. The coin shows Liberty wearing a feather head dress of America native.

This represents the scene where Miss Maudie’s house is on fire. This shows us that there will be something chaotic happening. In addition, Scout has a blanket around her but she did not bring it with her. She was so busy watching the fire that she did not realize that Boo Radley had put the blanket around her shoulders.

chapter 3

During lunch,scout rub's walter cunningham nose in the dirt when suddenly jem came by and stop her.jem grinned at walter after knowing that mr walter cunningham was his dad and invited him over to have dinner at the finch.The three talk about boo radley house as they walked past it to reach home.At the Finch house, Walter and Atticus talk about the farms conditions “like two men however”.scout repeatedly sarcastically replied to walter , calpurnai then summons Scout into the kitchen and gave her a slap and made her eat in the kitchen, and told her to be a better hostess.
During school Miss Caroline as terrified as a bug crawled out of a boy's hair, his name was burris ewell. In fact, Burris only comes to school the first day of every school year, making a token appearance to avoid trouble with the law.

chapter 4

Scout sees two pieces of chewing gum and eats both of them but Jem makes her spit them out.during the last day of school scout discovered 2 old indian head pennies at the same knothole where she found the chewing gum.Dunring summer Dill comes back and they are playing all their games once again.

What is this passage trying to tell us ?


Answer :
He was about to cry as his eyes were red and watery. I think that he was being bullied as he was feeling nervous. We know that Walter is a timid person.


2. Do you think it is right for Walter to stay out to help his father and as a result he cannot pass his first grade?


Answer:
I think that studies should come first. Walter can still help his father out during the holidays. Parents tend to hope that children can focus on their studies first than to helping them out. But however, Walter's father asked Walter to help him out instead of asking him to focus on his studies. This shows that the Cunningham think that studies are not very important.

3. Why did Miss Caroline want Burris to go home?

Answer:
He had cooties and Miss Caroline wanted him to go home to wash his hair with lye soap and treat his scalp with kerosene so that he won't spread it to other children.

Chapter 1

In this chapter there is a girl who's name is Scout. She is 5 years old. She has a brother named Jem who is older than her. One summer, Jem had broken his arm. And he broke it badly in the elbow. He broke his arm when he was thirteen. Now, she is trying to explain the mystery of how he broke it. At first she starts introducing about some of the people in the neighbourhood. In this neighbourhood, everybody knows everybody. In Scout's family, she has a father named Atticus, Jem, and a cook, who is African American, named Calpurnia. But at the same time Jem broke his arm, that's when they met Dill. Maybe Dill had something to do with the mystery. For the whole summer, they wanted to get Boo Radley out of his house. There was a urban legend that the Radley house was haunted. Everybody knows the different stories that happened in that house. Dill was the most curious about Boo Radley and he was the one who was the most curious among the 3 of them.

Chapter 2

Scout always wanted to go to school. But she already knew how to read on her own. So on the first day of school, when Miss Caroline Fisher expected that no one would know how to read, she was surprised that Scout knew how to read. She tells her that her dad should stop teaching her because he doesn't know how. But Scout had learned reading by herself. Miss Caroline asked the students what they were doing for lunch. Went her classmate, Walter Cunningham, didn't have any money with him, she offered to lend him some. Walter wouldn't accept any of it because he couldn't pay it back. When Miss Caroline heard this, she was not pleased with the way Scout explained it and hit her on the hands.

In 193os, more than 2 million of African America were slaves in America.There was no nation in greater horror of racism then in America. Regulations were set affecting free negros. (free negro was a term used to describe African Americans who were not slave to the abolition of slavery) Free negro was required to give the mayor a 'satisfatory evidence of freedom'. This requires $50 for himself, $50 for each of his family members and to post a bond of a $1000 to secure 5 white guarantors of good behavior.

In order to remain free, gangs bent on kidnapping and most of the time seizing. In america, if a student had murdered someone he was able to attracts less attention and criticism but if your a negro, slave or free negro you could not testify against the whites.

Negros are often called 'nigger' which is one of the most offensive word in english. They suffered humilations and insults. I personally thinks that every race should had equal treatments.
